What is Treatment-Resistant Depression?

How Does Esketamine Work?

Esketamine works differently from traditional antidepressants. It is administered as a nasal spray under the supervision of trained healthcare professionals and is used together with an oral antidepressant prescribed by your Psychiatrist.

What happens during treatment?

Your treatment takes place at Central Coast Clinic in a calm and supportive environment.

Before Treatment

Please remember:

• Do not eat for 2 hours before your appointment
• Do not drink fluids for 30 minutes before your appointment
• Avoid nasal sprays or decongestants for 1 hour before treatment

During Treatment

• Your blood pressure and wellbeing will be checked
• You will self-administer the nasal spray under supervision
• Our team will support you throughout the process
• You will remain in the clinic for monitoring after treatment

Most patients are ready to leave approximately 90 minutes after treatment, although individual experiences may vary.

What might I experience?

Some people notice effects during or shortly after treatment, including:

• Feeling sleepy
• Dizziness
• Nausea
• Changes in taste
• Feeling detached or disconnected from surroundings
• Temporary increases in blood pressure

These effects are generally temporary and are carefully monitored by our clinical team.

How often will I attend?

• Twice weekly during the first month
• Then weekly or fortnightly as advised by your Psychiatrist

Is esketamine addictive?

Clinical studies have not shown signs of addiction when esketamine is used as prescribed and under medical supervision.

Can I stop my other antidepressant medication?

No. Esketamine is usually prescribed alongside an oral antidepressant. Always follow your Psychiatrist’s advice.
